June 14th (Saturday)
10:00 AM - 8:00 PM  -  Black Book Expo

The 2008 L.A. Black Book Expo returns with a day of activities inside the Ahmanson Senior Center at Exposition Park. The following is a list of general events taking place at the expo:

Ongoing (sign up at the registration table):
Scavenger Hunt; Buy-A-Book, Win-A-Free-Dinner; Legends Guessing Game (in Ballroom immediately after each panel discussion)

10:00 AM - 6:00 PM  - Ahmanson Senior Center
Author and exhibitors on display in the front patio, ballroom and courtyard. Meet and greet national, international and local authors selling and signing their books.

10:30 AM - 4:00 PM - Children’s Literary Zone, Senior Lounge
Children's authors, storytellers, and other fun activities for the young ones! A Young Authors Forum will discuss "Keeping The Tradition Alive", and a youth writing contest.

11:00 AM - 5:50 PM - Panel Discussions, Ballroom
Topics include the following:

WRITERS' -The Art of the craft
SPIRITUAL -Writing tales for the soul
PUBLISHING –The Keys to Success
MEDIA – Creating a Name for Yourself
CULTURAL – A New Direction or the Same Path?

(Hosted by the Poet's Jazz House)
A day full of high energy from spoken word artists locally and across the nation. The first annual LABBX Youth Poetry Fest Contest sponsored by Kieren N. Boyce & an Anonymous Donor, will be held with participants competing for the grand prize; A FREE COMPUTER. The finals will be taped by Empire Beat Magazine and shown on the magazine's blog.

Our featured guests are Northern California spoken word artists Terry a O'Neal and Terry Moore with special guests from Philadelphia, Quiet Rage! The Poets Jazz House will also perform and open mic segments for those in attendance.

6:00 PM - 8:00 PM - After Party
Networking, fun, food and live entertainment! Featured artists: Wendy Alaine Wright and Patryce 'Choc 'let' Banks.

Bern Nadette Stanis -is an American actress best known for her role as the strong-willed Thelma Evans on the CBS sitcom, Good Times. Currently she is the author of Situations 101, a book based on the good, the bad and the ugly of relationships. Ms. Stanis is also the author of For Men Only, described as a 'romantic and sensual book of poetry.

Bruce George - is co-creator of Def Poetry Jam, executive producer, writer, poet and activist. He was born and raised in New York City. He has written poetry/prose & articles for over 37 years. His work has been published in major magazines, anthologies, and literary publications. He has written testimonials from the likes of Essence Magazine, Emerge Magazine, Class Magazine, Harlem River Press etc… Bruce has won multiple poetry & talent contests. He has won several awards such as a “Peabody Award” for “Russell Simmons Presents, Def Poetry (HBO)”, a “Miky Award” for “Russell Simmons Presents, Def Poetry Jam (HBO)”, an “Upscale Showcase Award”, a “Trail Blazer Award” etc… for his outstanding vision, production, writing and performance.

Alretha Thomas - is an author, playwright, producer and director. She was a NAACP Theatre Award Nominee for Best Actress, won a NAACP Theatre Award for her written play, Civil Rites (2004) and currently wrote and produced Grandpa’s Truth (2006) where local news station KTLA news (Channel 5) featured the play. Along with writing and producing, Alretha directed her recent play Sacrificing Simone receiving the praise of the L.A. Times as calling it “an inspirational crowd pleaser”. Alretha is the author of her first book, Daughter Denied and completed her first feature length screenplay, Reddie Maid Wife.

Michelle Washington - author of “Soul Poems for My Sistas” is a spoken word artist sharing her inspiration poetry and prose about relationships, the times in which we live and hope in the midst of despair. She is a member of the National Writers Association and the Academy of American Poets. Michelle is also the author of her first novel, “No More Lies”.

 

Dr. William D. Wright - is the author of seven books, including Crisis of the Black Intellectual. He received a Ph.D from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a Masters Degree from the University of Michigan.  Dr. Wright has written a number of journal articles, Op-Ed pieces and has appeared on television shows and panels, most recently at Book Expo America and the Harlem Book Fair.

Angela Alexander - Angela is the author of her autobiography, “Miracles in Action”. Angela’s family was involved in a fatal car crash where her two eight-year sons died instantly at the scene. The miracle is God allowed both of her children to write and leave behind incredible good-bye letters. An inspirational story that proves God is always in control of every situation.

Sherrance Henderson - (The Ten Year Date) is an author and entrepreneur who has worked with several of America’s finest Fortune 500 corporations. With undergraduate and graduate degrees from Howard and Johns Hopkins Universities, Sherrance knew she wanted to be a writer since her young and very humble beginnings as a child growing up in Brooklyn, New York.  The oldest of two siblings reared by a single parent, Sherrance inherited her unyielding work ethic and keen grasp of the English language from her mother, a tenured educator. These traits, acquired at such a young age, would later give birth to an author and her debut novel, “Sunshine Has Rain”. Sherrance’s leap into the literary arena would later cause her to be dubbed as the “Queen Bee of Fiction” by her closest friends and associates.

Cherilyn Azubuike- Author of “Unveiling The Mask”, Cherilyn is a professional speaker who has toured around the country and has addressed foundations, school districts, faith based institutions as well as civic and community organizations. Tanya White - is described as a go-getter, trailblazer, visionary, and trendsetter. The author of two books, Relationship Reruns and How To Deal With A Difficult Woman, Tanya is a talented life success coach, educator and empowerment speaker. She taught bible study classes for almost ten years to Christian singles at one of Louisville’s largest African-American churches, launched a weekly e-newsletter back in 2005 entitled, Tanya’s Tips is was featured in the 2007 and 2008 of the Who’s Who of Black Louisville directory.

Anthony Miner - Author of If You Like Chocolate Eat Chocolate. He worked for Warner Bros. Records as a Dance Music Promotion Manager, Sony Records and Virgin Records as an A&R Manager. He left the music business to enroll in Wilfred Beauty Academy where he graduated at the top of his class. Anthony has worked on various shows and movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Charlie’s Angels, The Wayne Brady Show, The Insider and Heroes. He is currently writing his second book, The American Breast Feeder.

Frederick Williams is an adjunct professor of African American Studies at University of Texas at San Antonio: Areas of teaching include: Political Science from a Black Perspective, African American Political Thought, Introduction to African American Studies and Novelists of the Harlem Renaissance. He has also taught a course on Creative Writing at the University. Mr. Williams is also an author with three published novels. His current work is “Just Loving You” He is also founder of Readers and Writers Group of San Antonio. Each year they sponsor Fiction Writers Weekend in San Antonio, featuring outstanding African American writers throughout the country. Mr. Williams is recipient of the 2003 Frederick Douglass Award for outstanding teaching. He resides in San Antonio with his wife Venetta and daughter Carrie.

Patryce “Choc’Let’ Banks - A former lead singer of Graham Central Station (Larry Graham’s group), Choc’Let has appeared on “Soul Train,” “Rock Concert,” and “Midnite Special” earning gold record and Grammy nominations in the process. Choc’Let has also lent her vocal support on tour and in the recording studio to artists such as B.B. King, Stephanie Mills, Chaka Kahn, Wayne Henderson and the Crusaders, Ronnie Laws,and Dr. Dre, only to name a few. During the past decade she has performed with Rose Royce of “Car Wash” fame, as the featured female lead singer, traveling the states and abroad performing in concert, festivals, radio, and TV appearances. Presently, Choc’Let is looking forward to sharing her adventures from a candid “horse’s mouth” point of view in her long anticipated debut book “A Choc’Let State of Mind,” featuring short stories and poetry. She will follow with a novel, “Deja View.”

Terry Moore - is the author of fifteen poetry books and seven spoken word CDs
Appeared on the world famous Showtime at the Apollo. He’s been nominated by the Los Angeles Black Music Awards in 2004 for “Best Spoken Word Performer”. Terry is also a Twelve time Slam Champion.
